Payment timetable

Unlike credit and debit card transactions, PayPal payments must be captured within three calendar days of authorisation. The payment is cancelled at the end of the third day if it is not captured.

To ensure PayPal receive the capture information in time, PayPal payments processed by Worldpay are automatically set to Auto Capture. This means the payment capture occurs at the end of each day. As an alternative, you can set the capture delay to any time up to three days, but we strongly recommend two days.

If you wish to capture or cancel a PayPal payment before the delay has expired, you can do it manually in the Merchant Admin Interface Guide. There is a real time error message produced if there is a problem with the capture. Typical problems are insufficient funds in the shopper's account or the authorisation has been cancelled. In addition to an error message you get confirmation that the payment could not be captured.

If you want to capture payments instantly, you can use an Order Modification request.

Best practice:  Worldpay recommend you do not ship any goods until the payment has been captured as the payment could fail to capture successfully - if, for example, the shopper's PayPal account no longer has sufficient funds. We do not recommend that you ship the goods when the status is AUTHORISED - wait for the payment to be captured.
